Editorial

Welcome to your new Substack Newsletter. This is slightly longer than usual due to the time gap since the last edition. We have abandoned Mail Chimp and time-consuming emails and have set up the newsletter on Substack which will come to you via ffauk@proton.me .

We have made the url of the website easier to pronounce and type - ffauk.org . Three “f’s” were too much for comfort! However, the original url will remain live while we distribute thousands of business cards printed with that url.

Much has been happening. There is a slow but steady trickle of news, with the majority being positive news from the USA. Although the US Government is quietly determined to stop adding fluoride to treated water in the States, State legislation, the American Dental Association and vested interests stand in the way of immediately stopping WF altogether despite the US National Toxicology Program sounding alarm bells in respect of exposure to fluoride and reduced IQ. Pro-fluoridationists are down but not out and the Government Department which has the responsibility for the Environment Protection Agency has now appealed at the last hour against Judge Chen’s ruling on fluoride and children’s IQ.

There is a lot of nonsense spouted in the USA about IQ only reducing above 1.5 mg fluoride/litre, as if there could possibly be a cut-off point! Since IQ reduction in the presence of fluoride is a dose-response relationship, a cut-off point is an unreal conclusion. Sliding scales don’t stop sliding just because pro-fluoridationists try to make it so. As an example of this inability to understand the truth when it hits you in the choppers, last month I received an email containing a comment on a Washington Post article which claims that the IQ reduction only occurs above 1.5 mg fluoride/litre:

“Studies have also shown fluoride can have harmful effects at high concentrations that are well above levels considered safe for fluoridated water.”

Rick North, a fellow member of the Fluoride Action Network, has written to the Washington Post journalists remonstrating against their parroting of misinformation and has asked his American colleagues to do the same.

In the email communication, Rick stated:

“This misinformation continues to plague us, and it especially hurts when it’s spread by papers like the Post, which are heavily syndicated.”

We can only hope that Rick succeeds in persuading the journalists that it is not smart to report something which they have not personally verified. However, that’s the way of journalism these days – lazy repeating, not diligent checking.

This lack of verifying has infected one American State – Connecticut - which has recently voted to reinforce its water fluoridation practice, thus bucking the trend. The propaganda video below which discusses the mandate says nothing about reduced IQ.

The USA is in a period of flux. Not so the UK where the fluoridation machine powered by “The Establishment” creeps on with great ponderousness. More on this later.

European Food Standards Agency (EFSA) Revised Standard for Fluoride (EU).

“Abstract. This updated risk assessment evaluated evidence on potential adverse health effects of fluoride related to all sources of oral exposure as mandated by the European Commission. Fluoride benefit assessment was not included. Effects on the central nervous system, thyroid and bone were prioritised. … The risk assessment suggests that the current legal limit for drinking water (1.5mg/L) in the EU is not sufficiently protective.“

“Tolerable upper intake levels (UL) of 1.0, 1.6 and 2.0 mg/day were established for infants, toddlers and children 4–8 years, respectively.”

Another recommendation coined, this time by the World Health Organisation (WHO) some years ago, is that adults should not ingest more than 6 mg fluoride/day from other sources. Currently, there are too many “standards” out there and what are alert parents to do and who to believe? On the surface, it seems as though the EFSA has dropped the “safe” standard from 6mg fluoride/day down to 3.3 mg fluoride/day. However, the latter does not stipulate “from other sources” and when bathing in fluoridated water, dermal absorption would allow the entry of hydrogen fluoride which is present in the hexafluorosilicic acid used for fluoridation programmes.

The UK’s Committee on Toxicity (A link to the report is currently unavailable) stipulates a maximum of 0.05 mg fluoride/ bodyweight/day and shies away from linking the standard with a child’s age. The authors of the British National Formulary for Children (BNFC) stipulate that a child between the ages of 6 months to 3 years where there is drinking water content of less than 0.3 mg fluoride/litre, should only be given a daily sodium fluoride pill containing 0.25 mg fluoride with the result that the maximum exposure to fluoride/day would be 0.55 mg. (Thankfully, there is no mention of giving an infant under the age of 6 months fluoride drops as is the case in the USA!). The BNFC is not in the public domain but can be consulted at a pharmacy.

With 4 different standards, it’s no wonder that the DHSC is sticking to the simplest - 1.5 mg fluoride/litre. But that does not account for exposure to fluoride from “other sources” and even though not specifically excluded, the WHO does not specify dermal absorption as being a criteria in its “from other sources” recommendation.

That can be easily reached and overtopped if people drink several mugs of tea per day and if their tap water is fluoridated. Our Freedom of Information requests which have attempted to bring this recommendation to the attention of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) began a surreal dialogue during which it became apparent that the DHSC does not want to learn about the “6 mg/day” recommendation because it contradicts the simpler “1.5 mg/litre” maximum concentration which the DHSC prefers.

Fluoridating water companies can control the concentration of fluoride per litre but cannot control over-indulgence. Therefore, the DHSC ignores daily over-indulgence and sticks to what is safer to defend. However, that means that those who over-dose on fluoride are never likely to hear from the DHSC about the perils of drinking too many mugs of tea per day. Also, how the skin absorbs hydrogen fluoride when in a hot bath would be a bridge too far the DHSC to stomach.

And now, it appears that the European Food Standards Agency (EFSA) has reduced the WHO’s maximum of 6 mg fluoride/day to 3.3 mg fluoride/day for all adults and children over 8 years of age. A step in the right direction, BUT whilst the WHO maximum is 6 mg including “from other sources”, there is no recognition by the EFSA of dermal absorption of hydrogen fluoride when bathing.

More toothbrush fairy interventions to help stop dental decay in deprived areas BUT the UK Government will still insist on Water Fluoridation in the North East.

“Funding worth £11 million has been invested in local authorities to deploy supervised toothbrushing in schools and nurseries that choose to sign up.

Data shows that a fifth of five-year-olds in England have tooth decay, with this rising to 33% in deprived areas.

The supervised toothbrushing scheme seeks to tackle this by reaching 600,000 3 to 5-year-olds in early year settings and establishing good toothbrushing habits from infancy.“

But good toothbrushing habits encourage self-inspired “behaviour change” which is something which Public Health (PH) is ambivalent about. Because PH favours water fluoridation which does not encourage behaviour change, heartfelt attempts at encouraging oral health via behaviour change are weakened.

“A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said funding for the scheme was allocated to 147 local authorities where there were 3- 5-year-olds living in the 20% most deprived areas.”

Total spend: £11 million on toothbrushes and £5 million (FoI on www.ffauk.org) on fluoridating those very same children who will be using the toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste purchased using the £11 million.

If the disadvantaged children swallow fluoride toothpaste, drink fluoridated water and eat fluoridated food, won’t that be over-exposing them on a daily basis? The EFSA (see above) has recommended a maximum of 2 mg fluoride/day for children aged 4-8 years regardless of weight. However, body weight really does matter because a maximum standard established by the Committee on Toxicity (CoT UK) already exists for fluoride exposure per kilo body weight:

“A total fluoride intake of 0.05 mg/kg bw/day represents a NOAEL* for moderate (aesthetically significant) dental fluorosis.”

(The CoT website is currently being overhauled and a URL does not exist.)

Some teenage girls and pregnant women are deficient in iodide so the reduced EFSA fluoride maximum does not entirely work in their favour.

Surely the UK health authorities should be appraising the “statistical outriders” and not prescribing fluoride toothpaste for all children and teenagers regardless of weight. Their individual differences would seem to argue that this “broad brush” approach is far too wide.

Shedding light on fluoride in tea: a roadmap to safer brews

“Fluoride absorbed by the leaves is transferred to the leaf tips and edges, chelates with metal ions, and the complexes are deposited in the leaves. Fluoride can be transferred from old leaves to new tips. Fluoride from soil and water can form complexes with organic acids and aluminum, which are stored in the leaves of tea plants. Fluoride from soil and water can also be individually absorbed and transported for storage in the leaves.”

The ”flavour” of this study is that fluoride-resistant tea bushes should be developed to prevent the uptake of fluoride which is then normally stored in tea leaves. I hope that this means selective “breeding” instead of GM technology.

The short report is worth reading. Expectant women should take special note due to the USA’s National Toxicology Program’s findings that fluoride reduces the unborn child’s IQ.

This is horrifying though: aluminium fluoride can be stored in the leaves of tea plants. Expectant mothers may be transferring aluminium fluoride via the placenta to her growing child and because there is no blood brain barrier at this stage, the unprotected brain will be contaminated with aluminium even before the child is born. It’s time to consult Mr Aluminium, Dr Chris Exley again.

The Canadian water utility company, Liberty Utilities, has announced that it will be stopping the fluoridation of the following areas of California:

Compton, Lynwood, Bellflower, Norwalk, Artesia and parts of Los Angeles.

Heavy metal content of over-the-counter toothpastes—a systematic review of in vitro studies.

This research refers specifically to fluoride toothpaste sold in the USA. Further research is needed to determine whether fluoride toothpaste sold in the UK does or does not contain heavy metals. While this confirmation is being sought, the Precautionary Principle should be observed: “If in doubt, leave it out.”

“The EPA appealed a federal court decision which ordered it to set new rules on water fluoridation. The agency didn’t contest the findings that current water fluoridation poses a risk to pregnant women and children. Instead, it challenged the judge’s decision to consider new evidence during the case, and the plaintiffs’ legal right to sue.”

Note: It is possible that this appeal will take months to get into the courts. What is the head of the EPA thinking of? While they are dithering, more children will be born with reduced IQ which equates to permanently damaged brains.

Our Legal Group Challenge

As you can see from the contents of this newsletter, the items just skim the surface of this controversial issue. There are long-established anti-fluoridation groups worldwide and the fight will and must continue.

In England, we really need to push our “kick back” along and to this end we are repeating our call for more claimants for our legal Group Challenge. We have extended the request to include those who are living and working in England, who are over 18 and who are concerned but not yet threatened nor fluoridated. To increase the number of claimants, we’re pulling out all the stops and pressing hard on the “loud” peddle. An appearance at the Wellness Festival in Berkshire on 9th August was followed by four days at the Weekend Truth Festival in Workington, West Cumbria on 22nd -25th August where we teamed up with Fluoride Free Cumbria. Our “ask” for participation in our Group Challenge is painless: a willingness to stand up and be counted, a signed contract with our Barrister, and an admin fee for the contract which can be reduced in cases of low income.

More importantly, there is absolutely no risk of claimants incurring court costs because Stage 1 (which is the only stage we are interested in currently) does not take place in a court of law. Stage 1 simply adds the names of Group A and Group B claimants at the end of a Letter Before Claim (LBC). Stage 1 and the contract end when the Government’s Solicitors reply to our LBC.

If a claimant wishes to proceed to Stage 2 (if Stage 2 is deemed necessary), our claimants will be asked to enter into a new contract.

The conditions for becoming a Group A or Group B claimant are to live and work in England and to be over 18. Group A comprises people who are fluoridated, Group B comprises people who are threatened and Group C comprises concerned people in the UK who are not fluoridated nor threatened. Thus, those living in Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland can only join Group C.

This is the best chance we have had for decades. Everything else has been tried but the DHSC, the Government and its Establishment are not prepared to budge. However, even they must be trembling in their shoes because of the legal ruling from the States that “fluoride poses an unreasonable risk to the IQ of children”. Moreover, precedents and laws which challenge the permitting law via the UK judicial system are now our strength.

If this current legal challenge fails to gain traction, then we will all have to hang up the boxing gloves and invest in efficient filtration.
